Lesson in Lonavala Chikki

Updated: Jul 29, 2022

I love to travel by train with my family and this trip from Bombay to Bangalore came as a welcome opportunity that allowed us to slow down from the usual hustle of our busy city lives!

As the train was about to leave the Lonavala Station, a young man in his early twenties, approached our seats and offered to sell the famous Lonavala Chikki and some jelly sweets - which instantly brought back childhood memories for my wife Pooja, who used to frequently visit Lonavala in her growing-up years! We glance at each other and start talking about our favourite childhood moments to our daughters (who have so far not visited Lonavala!). Once we had selected the items to buy, we asked the young man how much we owed him - and he said "70 plus 50 = 120 rupees." Pooja offered him two hundred rupee notes and asked him to keep it, partly appreciating his effort to sell, and partly because of the fond memories he brought back for us! And here comes the magic moment … He said "thank you ma'am, Bhagwan Ka diya sab kuch hai, extra paise nahin chahiye!" (thanks to God I have everything that I need, I do not want the extra money!)

The simplest of acts can show us what happiness and contentment look like. This was surely one such act… Thank you my dear friend, you made our train journey extra special showing us your heart full of contentment!
