Last week I was in one of my coaching sessions with a client, when the discussion moved to "Intrinsic Motivation" - something that drives us internally, and is often not externally measurable.
What makes us go the extra distance to nurture talent in our organization by spending additional time over a coffee with a colleague despite a long day?
What makes us think about the difference our work is making to the lives of others in every small or big way?
What makes us prioritize taking care of our pet dog by taking her to the vet in spite of an overflowing to-do list and a full calendar?
What makes us pour our heart into pruning the drying leaves and watering the plants while no one is watching and no one is there to say 'thank you'?
What makes us stand by a friend who has lost his mother and accompany him all the way to Haridwar for the final send-off?
Such actions neither grow our monthly pay check, nor get recognized in any special way. They neither add to our job-title, nor strengthen our power equation.
And yet, when we are open and willing to listen to our inner-voice, to meet life where it is, we feel driven and inspired in our heart - we feel intrinsically motivated.
What were some of your experiences of Intrinsic Motivation?
