Five things I have learnt from Fae, our pet doggo!

Updated: Feb 3, 2023

It's been only 5 months since we adopted Fae, our little Indie fairy pup. She was 7 months old when she came to our home. As her rescuer put it, she had survived through more life threatening challenges than any dog should go through in a lifetime!

  1. Caring -- Fae has taught me what caring out of love means. Whether you are tired, sleepy, or busy, when you care out of love, you find a way and you prioritize. It is no different than caring for your own child when they are an infant or toddler.

  2. Being Present -- Fae has shown me the power of being present and listening. When I am fully there with her, be it while walking her, or playing with her, or feeding her, I can feel her whole being connected with me. And sometimes I have long conversations with her, and she patiently indulges me!

  3. Overcome fear with Love -- I was never a dog person till Fae came home. I did not have a pet while growing up so the courage of getting a doggy came from my wife. But once Fae was with us, I found myself crossing many self-imposed boundaries. Now I am a thoroughly converted dog person!

  4. Showing-Up -- I picked this one from another person on LinkedIn who had shown how his health and exercise routine had got catalysed after he had started showing up for walking his dog. With Fae, it is not about which toy we will play with, or how well the food is prepared for her today - what matters is "are we showing up?"

  5. Real Inspiration for 'downward dog'! -- I have been a yoga practitioner for a few years, and while I have had fantastic teachers, never before did I realize how good dogs are at doing the downward dog! Now I picture Fae while doing my Sun Salutations and I can tell you, I am getting better!

Most of these learnings are really helpful in my journey as a coach as well - especially being present, overcoming fear, and creating a safe and nurturing space with my clients. I would love to hear what amazing things you have learnt from your pets. Please share in the comments.
